PAMOJAs and PIUMAs demands to the International
AIDS Society (IAS):
IAS
must champion "Accountability for Delivery"
at all levels from everyone who claims to fight AIDS, making it the
central theme for AIDS 2012.
IAS must implement effective mechanisms
that ensure its own members
are not involved in corrupt practices and that all organizations that
participate in its events are subject to regular, independent, financial
and program audits.
IAS
must refuse to be a platform for individuals or organizations
who violate the human right to basic health care or who fail to advocate
for those whose rights are violated or fail to hold accountable those
who misuse health ressources.

Blood
on their hands: PAMOJA is demanding accountability from
the Lutheran church and government authorities responsible for the gross
abuse of the human rights of HIV positive people living in Makete District,
Tanzania, leading to impairment of treatment and an increase in HIV
transmission and deaths. PAMOJA
and the self-help patients group PIUMA are participating in AIDS 2010
with a kiosk that accuses these authorities of having blood on their
hands for their refusal to act to end the woefully inadequate care available
in the local Tanzanian Lutheran hospital.

Venezuelan
antitrust authority fines Becton Dickinson,
an extract from Latin Lawyer - www.latinlawyer.com.
Becton Dickinson has been fined in 2005 by Venezuela's antitrust authority
for its refusal to sell medical products needed to combat the spread
of HIV/AIDS and for abusing its dominance in the Venezulean market.
According to press articles Becton Dickinson also maintains a monopoly
on its FACSCount CD4-Counter in Tanzania, which is reportedly unable
to monitor the immune status of HIV-infected infants. Since the FACSCount
was installed at Bulongwa Lutheran Hospital many members of PIUMA could
not get their CD4-counts done on a regular basis, as the counter has
broken several times.
